Abstract

A new needle design for percutaneous vascular access incorporates a unique stylet configuration into a butterfly cannula. Anterior wall femoral artery puncture was achieved in 39 of 50 patients (78%). Design characteristics promote the appropriate use of force for arterial puncture. A balanced shorter needle improves accuracy and results in a central alignment of cannula and the vessel lumen.
