Influence of Exercise Intervention on the Quality of Life for Colon Cancer: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Studies

Abstract

Introduction The influence of exercise intervention for colon cancer remains controversial. We conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the effect of exercise intervention on the quality of life in patients with colon cancer.

Methods We have searched PubMed, EMbase, Web of science, EBSCO, and Cochrane library databases through September 2020 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the effect of exercise intervention for colon cancer. This meta-analysis is performed using the random-effect model.

Results Five RCTs are included in the meta-analysis. In patients with colon cancer, exercise intervention is associated with improved health-related quality of life (SMD=2.79; 95% CI=1.66 to 3.92; P<0.00001) and reduced fatigue score (SMD=−2.21; 95% CI=−3.22 to −1.20; P<0.0001), but revealed no obvious impact on emotional functioning (SMD=0.51; 95% CI=−0.57 to 1.58; P=0.35), anxiety score (SMD=−0.93; 95% CI=−2.50 to 0.64; P=0.25) or weight (SMD=0.28; 95% CI=−0.19 to 0.75; P=0.24).

Conclusions Exercise intervention is effective to improve the quality of life in patients with colon cancer.

Zusammenfassung

Einleitung Der Einfluss von Bewegungstherapie bei Kolonkarzinom bleibt umstritten. Wir führten einen systematischen Review sowie eine Meta-Analyse durch, um den Einfluss von Bewegungstherapie auf die Lebensqualität von Patienten mit Kolonkarzinom zu untersuchen.

Methoden Wir haben die Datenbanken PubMed, EMbase, Web of science, EBSCO und Cochrane Library bis September 2020 nach randomisierten kontrollierten Studien (RCTs) durchsucht, die die Wirkung von Bewegungstherapie bei Kolonkarzinom untersuchen. Diese Meta-Analyse wurde anhand des Random-Effekt-Modells durchgeführt.

Ergebnisse Fünf RCTs wurden in die Meta-Analyse einbezogen. Bei Patienten mit Kolonkarzinom ist Bewegungstherapie mit einer Verbesserung der gesundheitsbezogenen Lebensqualität (SMD=2,79; 95% CI=1,66 bis 3,92; P<0,00001) und einer Verringerung des Fatigue-Scores verbunden (SMD=−2,21; 95% CI=−3,22 bis −1,20; P<0. 0001), zeigte jedoch keine deutliche Wirkung auf die Emotionale Funktion (SMD=0,51; 95% CI=−0,57 bis 1,58; P=0,35), die Angstwerte (SMD=−0,93; 95% CI=−2,50 bis 0,64; P=0,25) oder das Körpergewicht (SMD=0,28; 95% CI=−0,19 bis 0,75; P=0,24).

Schlussfolgerungen Bewegungstherapie ist ein wirksames Mittel zur Verbesserung der Lebensqualität von Patienten mit Kolonkarzinom.
