Isolation and Pharmacological Action of Epistephanine, an Alkaloid of Stephania hernandifolia

Abstract

Alkaloids epistephanine, hernandifoline, aknadinine and magnoflorine have been isolated from the aerial parts of Stephania hernandifolia (Willd.) Walp. This is the first report of the occurrence of epistephanine in S. hernandifolia and it appears to be identical with aknadine, an uncharacterised alkaloid of this plant previously reported by an Indian worker. Epistephanine was found to possess significant adrenergic neurone blocking activity.
