Phosphatases Activity in the Uterus of Intact and Ovariectomized Rats: Reponse to Embelia ribes Extracts

Abstract

The effect of 50 % ethanolic and benzene extracts of Embelia ribes Burm. on acid and alkaline phosphatase activity in the uterus of adult intact and ovariectomized rats has been studied biochemically. The activity of both enzymes depends upon the dose and the period of treatment. The enzymic activity increases under the influence of these extracts. The lower dose, 25 mg/ kg was statistically insignificant in each series of tests to produced any change in the activity (vs. control P > 0.05); but activity increased significantly when the dose was increased to 50 and 75 mg/kg and administered for 18 days (vs. control P < 0.001; < 0.01; < 0.02). Of the two, 50 % ethanolic extract seems to be more potent. The results were more consistent in ovariectomized rats than intact ones. The role of two enzymes in relation to the possible mode of action of these extracts has been discussed.
