Abstract

By feeding taxifolin and coniferyl alcohol, the formal components of silymarin from the fruits of Silybum marianum, silybin could be isolated out of the substrate of a Silybum suspension culture; silybin was identified by spectroscopic methods. Horseradish-peroxidase and a cell free extract of silybum suspension cultures were also able to synthesize silybin starting from taxifolin and coniferyl alcohol. In an analogue way hydnocarpin, a flavonolignan from Hydnocarpus wightiana, was synthesied by feeding Silybum suspension cultures with luteolin and coniferyl alcohol.
