HIERACIUM PILOSELLA ALS ARZNEIPFLANZE GEGEN BRUCELLOSIS

Summary

Pilosella had been used empirically in Europe for several centuries in the treatment of various diseases. It was interesting to examine its activity and discover the reason of it. As a result of our investigations during the past several years, it may be concluded that:

  1. The aqueous extract of Hieracium Pilosella L. cuts short the growth of species of micro–organisms, chiefly Bruceila melitensis, B. abortus bovis, B. suis. Given to animals it produces none of the frequent trouble caused by other antibiotic substances (intestinal troubles, allergic phenomena, .. .). Without toxicity, it can be given during several months without arising of an organic lesion.

  2. A series of further cases of undulant fever treated with extract of Pilosella and surveyed since were collected (1953, 1955, 1959). This treatment is easily tolerated, non toxic and remarkably effective even in those cases of chronic brucellosis.

  3. Chemical analysis of Hieracium Pilosella allowed us to reveal two groups of active constituents: a) diuretic substances (flavonoids), b) antibiotic substances (umbelliferone, caffeic and chlorogenic acids).
