2-Bromo Benzofurans and Benzothiophenes via Cu-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling

Significance

Benzofused heterocycles are pervasive in natural products, medicinal agents, and organic-based materials. In this report a method for synthesizing 2-halobenzofurans and benzo-thiophenes utilizing an aldehyde dibromoolefination followed by CuI-based intramolecular cross-coupling is presented. The method benefits from ease of purification and an operationally simple procedure. The use of a ligand-free copper catalyst system allows for purification by silica gel filtration.
