Significance

Small p-type organic semiconductor molecules are an interesting alternative to polymer-based electron donors in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaic cells due to their easier purification and monodispersity. The authors synthesized a series of squaraine dyes (5a-e) and investigated their behavior in BHJ solar cells with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as the electron acceptor.
