Significance
Attempts to demethylate the 1,4-phenanthrenequinone (1) using standard conditions yielded an unexpected halogenated derivative. Alternative conditions using trimethylsilyl iodide or cerium ammonium nitrate were found to yield the desired diquinone 2 in moderate yield.
