Significance

Amongst porphyrins, systems with larger π-electron peripheries have become synthesis targets due to their red-shifted light absorbing properties. However, the preparation of fused porphyrin derivatives generally requires extensive syntheses leading to limited amounts for further use. Here, the authors present a simple, general route to α-formylated, β-substituted naphtho­bipyrroles, and their use in the preparations of ­binaphthoporphycenes.
