Significance

Ionic liquid supported benzimid­azole-linked pyrrolo-, pyrido- (72-85%) and isoindolo-benzimidazolones (79-82%) were prepared under microwave irradiation conditions. The double dehydrative cyclocondensation of the immobilized o-phenylenediamines 5 and keto acids took place successively in one step under microwave conditions to form pyrrolo-, pyrido-, and isoindolo-benzimidazolones 6-8 by way of the corresponding N,N′-alkylidene intermediates.
