A Silica-Supported Organocatalyst for the Preparation of Xanthenes

Significance

An acid-functionalized mesoporous silica (AFS-1) was prepared from a mesoporous silica (SBA-15), 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and 4-formylbenzoic acid. The reaction of aromatic aldehydes and 2-naphthol with AFS-1 gave the corresponding xanthenes in 75-82% yield (5 examples).
