Summary

The (-)-(1S, 3S) isomer of 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline-3-carboxylic acid was synthesised by Pictet-Spengler condensation of tryptophan with acetaldehyde. It was evaluated for its antioxidative activity in the linoleic acid autooxidation system by the ferric thiocynate method. Butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA), butylated hydroxy toluene (BHT), and α-tocopherol were used as the reference standards. The compound showed moderate antioxidative activity and also synergistic effect with the reference standards. The synergistic effect was in the increasing order of BHT, α-tocopherol and BHA. The synergistic effect was higher at higher concentrations studied

Zusammenfassung

Antioxidative Aktivität von 1-Methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carbolin-3-carboxylsäure

Das (−)-(1S,3S)-Isomer von 1-Methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carbolin-3-carboxylsäure wurde durch Pictet-Spengler-Kondensation von Tryptophan mit Aldehyd synthetisiert. Die Verbindung wurde auf antioxidative Wirkung im Linoleinsäure-Autooxidationssystem mittels Eisen (III)-Thiocyanat-Methode untersucht. Butyliertes Hydroxyanisol (BHA), butyliertes Hydroxy- toluol (BHT) und α-Tocopherol wurden als Vergleichssubstanzen verwendet. Die Testsubstanz zeigte mittlere antioxidative Wirkung sowie synergistischen Effekt mit den Vergleichssubstanzen. Der synergistische Effekt stieg in der Reihenfolge BHT − α-Tocopherol − BHA an und nahm in höheren Konzentrationen zu.
