Dieser Beitrag soll den aktuellen Stand des Wissens zur Pathophysiologie und Ätiologie der portalen Hypertension darstellen und einen sinnvollen Ansatz zur Patientenevaluation und zum diagnostischen Management vorschlagen. Des Weiteren sollen die wesentlichen primär- und sekundärprophylaktischen Therapiealgorithmen, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die viszeralmedizinisch interventionell und chirurgisch relevante Komplikation einer gastroösophagealen Varizenblutung, aufgezeigt werden.
