Microtia is a malformation of the outer ear resulting in variable phenotypic alterations of the auricle.

Ear reconstruction has been an important and challenging aspect of reconstructive surgery for centuries. This is true for congenital as well as acquired severe deformities of the ear. A complex three-dimensionality, along with a delicate convoluted structure, requires high surgical expertise and a meticulous approach. Only then an aesthetically satisfactory, mechanically stable, and long-lasting result can be achieved.

This issue contains a compilation of modern aspects of auricular reconstruction. I am happy to state that some of the most respected surgeons in this field have agreed to contribute their knowledge. This also includes the description of modern principles in hearing rehabilitation with the various patient groups.

I'm sure everyone who deals with ear reconstruction cases will derive a major benefit from reading this issue. I'd like to thank all the contributing authors, and I wish the readers some informative browsing in the articles of this journal.
