Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation: A Deal with the Devil?

Introduction

At the beginning of this millennium, the number of elderly and high-risk patients steadily increased in cardiac surgical practice. Initial developments of alternative minimally invasive transcatheter techniques were made by technicians from different companies together with physicians Alain Carpentier (Rouen, France) and Eberhard Grube (Siegburg, Germany). In early 2004 Friedrich Mohr, who served together with Michael Mack as an advisor to a valve company, thought about the potential for simple and safe implantation of such transcatheter valves. His personal contacts together with his vision to further explore the field of transcatheter techniques enabled us to evaluate initial devices in an experimental setting in Irvine, California, United States in autumn 2004. For these early experiential experiences, a multiinstitutional team from Dallas, Frankfurt, and Leipzig was built.
