Venkatesh received his schooling from Don Bosco Egmore and medical undergraduate training at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute of Chennai in India. He went to the United Kingdom in 1996 for his specialist training in surgery. On completion of his basic surgical training, he was awarded the Membership to the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) of Edinburgh in 2000.

He was appointed as Clinical Research Fellow at the University College London in 2000 to undertake research into screening for colorectal cancer and successfully published his work in reputed medical journals and presented his work at various international meetings.

He was appointed as Specialist Registrar in General/Colorectal Surgery to the South West Higher Surgical Training Program of United Kingdom in 2003. He was admitted to the Fellowship to the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) of Edinburgh in 2009 on passing the Intercollegiate Examination. He subsequently underwent advanced training in laparoscopic colorectal surgery in the South West of England.

He moved back to India in 2010 and was appointed Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Clinical Lead at the Institute of Colorectal Surgery which he set up at the Apollo Main Hospital Chennai. He set up the Minimally Invasive Colorectal Surgery Program in 2012. Now, the Institute of Colorectal Surgery routinely offers robotic and laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery within an enhanced recovery program for colorectal disease. Currently he performs the highest number of robotic colorectal cancer procedures in India and is actively involved in dissemination of this technique and its cost effectiveness across the world.

He is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is a very keen teacher and is actively involved in teaching minimally invasive surgical techniques to postgraduates and junior surgeons both in India and abroad. His specialist interest is in the management of all colorectal diseases particularly colorectal cancer and pelvic floor diseases. He was made Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Surgery at University College London in 2018 and teaches on their Masters' Course in Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery. He is married to his wife Subashini, and they have a lovely daughter who is in medical school. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, playing badminton, and music.
