Prophylaxe und Therapie von Atemwegsinfekten mit Echinacea-Extrakten

Zusammenfassung

Atemwegsinfekte sind primär viraler Genese, können aber auch durch Bakterien bedingt sein oder durch bakterielle Superinfektion kompliziert werden. Die unkritische Verordnung von Antibiotika bei viralen Atemwegsinfekten führt zu unerwünschten Wirkungen v.a. im Gastrointestinaltrakt, Allergien, Antibiotikaresistenz und unnötigen Kosten für das Gesundheitssystem. Zahlreiche pflanzliche Arzneimittel stehen zur Therapie akuter Atemwegsinfekte zur Verfügung. Zur Prophylaxe sowie zur Therapie akuter und rezidivierender Atemwegsinfekte geeignet sind Extrakte aus Echinacea purpurea. Echinaforce®, ein standardisierter, ethanolischer Extrakt aus frischem, blühendem Kraut und den Wurzeln von Echinacea purpurea, wirkt antiviral, antibakteriell und durch Immunmodulation entzündungshemmend. Eine aktuelle Metaanalyse belegt die Verminderung des Risikos von Rezidiven und Komplikationen von Atemwegsinfekten durch Echinacea im Vergleich zu Placebo.
