Zusammenfassung

Bis in die 1940er-Jahre führte eine komplette Querschnittlähmung im Bereich der Halswirbelsäule regelhaft innerhalb weniger Tage zum Tod. Während die Mortalität der Querschnittlähmung heute im Wesentlichen mit der Qualität der primärversorgenden medizinischen und rehabilitativen Strukturen zusammenhängt, ist die Lebenserwartung der Betroffenen vor allem dadurch bestimmt, ob es gelingt, den Patienten nach der Erstbehandlung in ein funktionierendes sozioökonomisches Umfeld zu integrieren und für den Fall von medizinischen Problemen eine qualifizierte Versorgung anzubieten.
