A series of 9,10-bis(p-R-phenylethynyl)anthracenes (6a-h) have been prepared in good yields via Pd(II)/Cu(I)-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of para-substituted phenylethynes (4a-h) and 9,10-diiodoanthracene (5). Similarly, 1,4-bis(9-ethynylanthracenyl)benzene (8) and 4,4′-bis (9-ethynylanthracenyl)biphenyl (9) were obtained from coupling reactions of 9-iodoanthracene (7) with 1,4-diethynylbenzene and 4,4′-diethynylbiplienyl respectively.
