A series of novel one-pot vicarious nucleophilic substitution/alkylation reactions are described. Reaction of the enolate of ethyl 2-chloropropionate with nitrobenzene followed by subsequent reaction with an alkylating agents gives a series of esters bearing a quaternary centre.
