Kinetic resolution via a Sharpless epoxidation serves as the key step to provide the useful C2 chiral auxiliaries (R,R)- and (S,S)-1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-diols, in good yield and high enantiomeric purity from the commercially available 1,3-diphenylprop-1-en-3-one.
