Thermal reactions of readily available chromium carbene complexes and propargylic alcohols in the presence of acetic anhydride and triethylamine provide new and efficient routes into functionalised β-lactones; this unprecedented Cr-mediated cyclisation process has been shown to be possible with a series of (3y-1y) propargylic alcohols.
