New Osteosynthetic Methods for Displaced Radial Neck Fractures in Adults

Abstract

For osteosynthesis of displaced radius neck fractures until now osteosynthetic material was available which provides both exercising stability and small design without impingement problems in this critical zone of elbow movement. The use of titanium mesh plates offers a new solution for this problem. Since March 2000 we have done 8 osteosyntheses in displaced radius neck fractures using a titanium mesh plate. Six of them are individually shaped either with 9 or with 12 holes. The mesh is wrapped around the radius neck and occupies the space of 1/4 to 1/3 of the circumference of the radius neck. There is no metal impingement and it allows active motion at once. In 2 cases, small replantation plates Profile Combo (8 holes) were used. The results show in all cases nearly normal ROM compared to the opposite side. The titanium mesh osteosynthesis provides stability without metal impingement in osteosynthesis of displaced radius neck fractures.
