Deutlich mehr Menschenleben durch effektivere Erste Hilfe und Reanimationsmaßnahmen zu retten, das ist das Ziel der neuen, überarbeiteten Richtlinien zur kardiopulmonalen Reanimation, die am 28. November 2005 zeitgleich in Europa und in den USA veröffentlicht wurden. Die in „Resuscitation” und „Circulation” veröffentlichten Dokumente beinhalten wichtige und teilweise gravierende Änderungen für die Reanimation durch medizinische Laien und professionelle Helfer [13] [16].

Vorausgegangen war eine mehr als zweijährige Projektphase, innerhalb derer sich internationale Experten des European Resuscitation Council (ERC), der American Heart Association (AHA) und weiterer Organisationen im Rahmen des seit 1992 existierenden multidisziplinären International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) [18] mehrfach in den USA und in Europa trafen, um die verfügbaren neuen Erkenntnisse nach einem sehr genau vorgegebenen Prozedere umfassend zu sichten und zu bewerten [21].
