Author summary

Outcomes were less favorable when stabilization of a femoral fracture was delayed, particularly in patients with multiple injuries in this randomized trial of early versus delayed stabilization in patients with acute femoral fracture. The incidence of pulmonary complications was higher, the hospital stay was longer, and the number of days in the intensive-care unit was increased. The cost of hospital care showed a statistically significant increase as well. The authors overwhelmingly recommend early stabilization of femoral and all long-bone fractures in multiply injured patients.
