Significance

Symmetrical biarylacetylenes are useful synthetic intermediates as well as the components of materials with useful physical properties. Their direct synthesis from aryl halides requires the use of gaseous acetylene, which is not convenient and dangerous. The authors report a simple and practical method of arylation of calcium carbide, a stable and cheap compound, in the presence of Pd(OAc)2 and a readily available aminophosphine ligand. A broad variety of aryl and hetaryl bromides give biarylacetylenes in good yields in a convenient and practical protocol.
