Significance

N-Acetylneuraminic acid is one of a family of 50 sialic acids that are important constituents in glycoconjugates. A general approach to the sialic acids is exemplified by the three-step synthesis of N-acetylneuraminic acid from L-arabinose featuring a highly diastereoselective Petasis reaction to construct the allylic amine derivative D.
