Tetrahydropentalene Ligands for Rh-Catalyzed Arylation of Arylimines

Significance

The authors introduce the new chiral C 2-symmetric diene ligand 1 as an addition to the family of diene ligands pioneered by Hayashi and Carreira. The utility of this ligand is demonstrated in the Rh-catalyzed arylation of N-tosyl­arylimines with various arylboronic acids. Notably, this system tolerates a broad range of substituted N-tosylarylimines to give products in excellent yields and ee values. Additionally, the use of appropriately designed substrates gives chiral ­phthalimidines.
