Significance

Synthesis of bay-region fused perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimides (PDIs) was achieved through application of the Ullmann reaction. A stoichiometric amount of CuI is required for this dramatic enlargement of the π-system. The UV-Vis spectra revealed the products to be ‘full-absorption dyes’ since both showed high extinction coefficients across most of the visible region. Additionally, cyclic voltammetry experiments reveal such compounds to be strong electron acceptors.
