Significance

A one-step synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted indoles via Cu-catalyzed α-arylation-cyclization of 2-iodoaniline with β-keto esters is described. This reaction proceeds smoothly under mild conditions in modest to excellent yields. 2-Aryl-, -heteroaryl-, and -monoterpenoid-substituted indoles were prepared. However, the scope and limitations of the iodoaniline coupling partner were not well investigated.
