Palladium-Catalyzed Hydroarylation of Styrenes under Aerobic Conditions

Significance

A new, fundamentally different approach to Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions has been disclosed. Pd(II) is hereby used under aerobic conditions. Reduction to the active Pd(0) species is carried out by a hydride transfer from the solvent (i-PrOH) providing a Pd hydride which undergoes alkene insertion. PhSnBu3 serves as second cross-coupling partner. The reaction proceeds with high regioselectivity.
