Zusammenfassung

Neben einer ausgewogenen Ernährung und einer zweckmäßigen Zahn- und Mundhygiene gehört die Anwendung von Fluoriden zu den Eckpfeilern einer umfassenden Kariesprophylaxe. Da während einer kieferorthopädisch-festsitzenden Therapie das Kariesrisiko erhöht ist, erscheint eine lokale Fluoridierung bei diesen Patienten als besonders wichtig. Um Demineralisationen des Zahnschmelzes zu verhindern, stehen eine Reihe von Möglichkeiten der Fluoridapplikation zu Verfügung. Dieser Artikel gibt eine Übersicht von effektiven Methoden der Fluoridzufuhr, wie sie in rezenter, evidenzbasierter Literatur diskutiert werden. Es wird versucht, daraus Empfehlungen für den klinischen Alltag abzuleiten.

Abstract

The cornerstones of caries prevention are a balanced nutrition, an adequate oral hygiene as well as the use of fluorides. In orthodontic patients the risk of caries is elevated, hence, local fluoridation seems appropriate. Several ways of fluoride application are available to prevent decalcification during fixed orthodontic therapy. This article gives a review of recent evidence-based literature concerning effective means of fluoride delivery in orthodontic patients. On the basis of available evidence, careful recommendations for daily routine are made.
