Significance

Five-membered heterocycles are important structural units found in all fields of organic chemistry. The authors demonstrate an sp³-hybridized carbon-carbon bond-forming reaction to produce 1,4-diketones that were further elaborated to methylthio-substituted furans, pyrroles and thiophenes via the Paal-Knorr cyclization in good yields.
