Abstract

Benign rolandic epilepsy of childhood with centrotemporal spikes represents the most common epilepsy syndrome in childhood. This study addresses cognitive deficits in the following domains that are quite common: language, attention, memory, executive functions, motor functions and visual-constructive functions. Mainly language functions and their specific related domains like dichotic hearing, and auditory (dys-)functions are in the focus of recent research. This review provides a differentiated summary of empirical findings, also in terms of probably persisting deficits after remission of the epilepsy. An early intervention for this group of children is essential as rolandic epilepsy occurs within the age range of primary school and might therefore exert a noticeable negative influence on school achievements.
