Summary
The digital age has had a profound and lasting effect on the patient–physician relationship, presenting unique challenges for both. Today, because the Internet is often the consumer’s virtual research library, patients, especially in the cosmetic surgery space, expect physicians to work with them—instead of just on them—to achieve their desired outcomes. Patients’ expectations are extremely high. Online review sites and message forums empower patients to have a voice, and therefore their perceived satisfaction, particularly with pre- and postoperative support, as well as with the treatment, dictates a practice’s reputation and overall success and sustainability. This chapter will help hair transplant surgeons and practice administrators better navigate the evolving field to meet their patients’ needs, providing insight into changing preferences, behaviors, and expectations. In doing so, the chapter will also provide a better understanding of how to utilize the Internet to both survive and thrive in this extremely competitive discipline of medicine.
