Abstract

Tendons of the foot and ankle are complex and balanced structures that play an important role in maintaining functional status both in daily activities and in situations of maximum demand such as high-endurance sports. Highly specialized to withstand large cyclical loads due to their great tensile strength, tendons on this region are especially susceptible to overuse injuries. Tendinopathies of the foot and ankle have a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and represent a common cause of morbidity producing important functional impairment with high chronicity potential. On the other hand, their intrinsic subcutaneous nature makes them also specifically vulnerable to foot and ankle trauma and lacerations.
