Immer noch begegnet man im Zusammenhang mit Hypnose der Vorstellung, Menschen mit hoher Suggestivkraft könnten mittels Induktion empfänglich gemachte Individuen durch suggestives Einreden „programmieren“. Wie der Zulauf bei Hypnoseshows zeigt, ist die Fantasie, willenlos zu sein, attraktiv. Nichtsdestotrotz löst das Wort Hypnose ambivalente Gefühle aus. Überzogene Heilerwartungen stehen auf der einen, Ängste bezüglich eines Kontrollverlusts auf der anderen Seite. Tatsächlich hat Showhypnose nichts mit Hypnotherapie zu tun und seriös arbeitende Therapeuten grenzen sich von solchen Veranstaltungen ab.
