Summary

Curcumin is the best characterized component of the rhizome of Curcuma longa L. which exhibits a variety of effects on the mammalian organism. Curcuminʼs antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties are of particular importance and potential. Due to its low side-effects, curcumin offers a valuable and effective adjuvant therapy, especially for older multi morbid dog patients, when combined with other analgesics. Moreover, it supports and protects the bodyʼs most important detoxification organ; the liver. Based on its neuroprotective effect in Alzheimerʼs disease and dementia, curcumin could provide an accompanying or preventive therapy option in the cognitive dysfunction syndrome of the dog. There is also scope for future studies regarding the possible palliative use of high-dose curcumin in tumors.
