erfordern.
Abstract
With increasing technical progress in the field of emergency medicine the essential
basic measures and techniques should not get out of sight. Within the first few seconds
of contact effective medical treatment can be applied. Especially patients in an emergency
– depending on severity of illness or injury – often suffer from existential fears.
Because of that, empathy, professionalism and setting up confidence within the first
few minutes and before applying the first measures, are of utmost importance. If the
patient is conscious, the physician should introduce himself to the patient together
with the first contact (e.g. to feel the pulse), which will help establishing a faithful
relationship. Thereafter the basic measures and techniques often can achieve a first
relief of symptoms. They prepare the track for a successful prehospital therapy, e.g.
intravenous analgesia. People working in the field of emergency medicine should therefore
train these measures and techniques routinely and in different teams. In addition,
team training and communication skills should become part of the daily schedule as
well. This article describes some basic measures and their performance, focusing on
those measures that only need few tools.
