Die mikrobielle Besiedelung der Mundhöhle mit komplexen, heterogenen Biofilmen, bestehend aus verschiedenen potenziell pathogenen Bakterien, gilt als primäre Ursache oraler Erkrankungen wie Karies, Gingivitis und Parodontitis. Darüber hinaus werden die Ätiologie und Pathogenese jedoch als multifaktoriell angesehen – so kann ein komplexes Zusammenspiel angeborener (genetischer), erworbener und verhaltensbedingter Faktoren sowohl die Entstehung als auch Progression (negativ) beeinflussen [1], [2].
