ABSTRACT

In this study, 14 % of the 151 jet pilots and weapons system officers (WSO) surveyed reported neck pain, this is significantly less than in the aeromedical literature. On the day of the examination / evaluation, all pilots/WSO were free of neck complaints and the clinical examination of the cervical spine was normal. This differences is possibly due to special examination situation, as well as the used definition of neck pain in pilots, “significant flight-related neck pain”. This is a highly limited definition of pain that occur during the flight service and last until 48 hours after the flight. Non-specific neck pain in jet pilots may cause temporary unfitness for flight, but the flight license is not at risk. However, specific neck pain after trauma, surgery or symptomatic degeneration generally excludes the military flying duty.
