Langeweile ist nicht langweilig

Von einer nebensächlichen Dummheit zur Funktion und Fehlfunktion

„Mama/Papa, mir ist langweilig“ – Eltern kennen das. Wer jetzt Vorschläge macht – „Du könntest mal wieder aufräumen/Klavier üben/Dein Buch weiterlesen“ – hat schon verloren, denn was man auch immer vorschlägt, wird prompt mit immer der gleichen Begründung abgelehnt: „Ist mir zu langweilig“. Man könnte auch anders reagieren: „Hey super! Endlich hast Du mal Zeit, einfach genau das zu machen, was Dir am meisten Spaß macht!“ – Dann wird man vom Kind ungläubig angesehen und erhält meist eine Antwort mit leicht aggressivem Unterton, etwa wie folgt: „Mach’ Dich bloß nicht über mich lustig!“

Glücklicherweise nimmt Langeweile mit zunehmendem Alter eher ab. Was Langeweile überhaupt ist, glaubt man zu wissen, solange man nicht gefragt wird. Historisch ist der Begriff schillernd, ohne klaren Kern, und eine systematische Definition gibt es (noch) nicht. Nur darauf, dass sie wie Schmerzen negativ erlebt wird, konnte man sich einigen, weswegen dieser Aspekt sicherlich zu ihrer Definition gehört: Keiner mag Langeweile gern. Ansonsten erscheint uns Erwachsenen Langeweile bei erster Näherung vor allem – langweilig. Warum sollte man sich mit einer solchen nebensächlichen Dummheit beschäftigen?

In den vergangenen 5 bis 10 Jahren wurden Forschungsergebnisse zur Langeweile – meist korrelative Studien und einige Experimente sowie neurowissenschaftliche Studien – publiziert, in denen es um interessante Korrelate von Langeweile geht. Mittlerweile zeichnet sich sogar – wer hätte das gedacht? – eine Funktion von Langeweile ab. Schließlich impliziert das Vorhandensein einer Funktion, dass auch Fehlfunktionen – in der Medizin spricht man von Pathologie – möglich sind. „Boredom gets Interesting“ (Langeweile wird interessant) titelte das Fachblatt Nature in einem Feature vom 14. Januar 2016 [59] nicht von ungefähr.
