SUMMARY

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) presented an periarticular demineralization in the near of joint surfaces based on the chronic inflammation within the small joints of the hands and feet. A sufficient quantification of periarticular demineralization can be performed by digital X-ray radiogrammetry and high resolution peripheral quantitative computertomography. Chronic inflammation and also disease activity is strongly associated with an increased periarticular demineralization. In this context, periarticular demineralization functions as surrogate marker of the severity and also activity of RA and based on the periarticular demineralization an assessment of therapeutic effects could be performed.
