Diabetes mellitus is the collective term for heterogeneous metabolic disorders whose main finding is chronic hyperglycaemia. The cause is either a disturbed insulin secretion or various grades of insulin resistance or usually both.

1 The team of authors has written the Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Commission for Laboratory Diagnostics in Diabetology/Kommission Labordiagnostik in der Diabetologie of the German Diabetes Society/Deutsche Diabetes Gesellschaft (DDG) and the German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (DGKL)/Deutschen Gesellschaft für Klinische Chemie und Laboratoriumsmedizin.
