Technology-Based Interventions in Sports and Exercise Therapy for People with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Summary
This review presents the potential of using technology-based interventions in sports and exercise therapy for people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and demonstrates their effectiveness in increasing physical activity behaviour and improving clinical variables. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions can yield effects comparable to those achieved through conventional training. The use of sensor technology (e.g. pedometers, accelerometers, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems) can enhance patients’ awareness of health-related factors and contribute to improved glycaemic control. However, additional high-quality studies (with homogenous study designs) and meta-analyses are needed to increase the robustness of the evidence and to provide clear and reliable recommendations for the integration of technology into exercise interventions for people with T2DM. Challenges of technology-based interventions include long-term adherence, exercise safety and data security issues.
