Ein zentrales Phänomen in diesem Zusammenhang ist der Metamerismus, der beschreibt, wie Materialien unter unterschiedlichen Lichtquellen verschieden erscheinen können. Die Nutzung der Fluoreszenzeigenschaften von Materialien hat sich als wertvoll erwiesen, um sowohl ästhetische Ergebnisse zu optimieren als auch diagnostische und therapeutische Verfahren zu verbessern. In diesem Übersichtsartikel werden die Mechanismen des Metamerismus, die Bedeutung der Fluoreszenz in der Zahnmedizin und ihre vielfältigen Anwendungen, von der selektiven Entfernung von Kompositen bis zur forensischen Identifikation, detailliert beleuchtet.
