Are there herbal alternatives to chemically defined antihypertensive drugs?
Abstract
Based on recent studies, three current guidelines on hypertension call for an even greater reduction in blood pressure than before. It is also becoming increasingly clear that monotherapy with a conventional antihypertensive drug does not sufficiently improve the risk profile for cardiovascular diseases, and that combinations with other active substances such as statins are therefore necessary. However, the pleiotropic effect of e. g. hibiscus flowers, green coffee beans, garlic bulbs, beet, hawthorn leaves and flowers or cinnamon bark in this respect has hardly been recognized to date. This article presents systematic reviews and meta-analyses of their antihypertensive potential.
