Abstract

Releasing hormone-induced secretion of TSH and LH was studied in 11 healthy subjects during infusion of physiological saline with and without salmon calcitonin (CT). Radioimmunologically measured serum concentrations of TSH and LH and time-concentration areas, assumed to be representative for hormone release, were found to be lower when CT was infused. As serum-calcium concentrations did not change significantly, a direct effect of CT on the secreting cells of the pituitary gland is postulated, probably mediated by an alteration in calcium fluxes.
