Abstract

Compartmental analysis of early T4 distribution has been studied in a group of subjects with thyrotoxicosis or hypothyroidism, by means of a mathematical model implemented on a digital computer.

In hyperthyroidism a significant shift of T4 from extracellular to intracellular compartments (namely the liver) is recognizable. In hypothyroidism on the contrary T4 remains mainly in the extracellular compartments, the hepatic accumulation being significantly decreased.

The transfer rates among the compartments are however almost the same, in spite of the quantitative differences in the T4 compartmental distribution.
